When a condition is complex or unusual, we may recommend involving a specialist so your pet can access advanced tests or treatment while we stay alongside you as their regular vet.
Specialist referrals — specialist care for tricky problems
Most pets can have all their care here at St Kilda Vet, but some conditions are best managed with a veterinary specialist. In those cases, we’ll talk through why a referral is helpful, recommend specialists we work closely with, and share your pet’s history so their care stays coordinated.
If your pet does see a specialist, we’ll stay in the loop and continue to be your first point of contact for ongoing check-ups and day-to-day care.
When your pet may benefit from a specialist
Most problems can be managed here, but some need more detailed tests or treatment. In those cases, we’ll explain why a specialist is a good choice and arrange a referral.

A diagnosis that isn’t fully clear yet
A condition that’s rare, complex or long‑standing

While your pet is seeing a specialist, we stay part of the process. We work closely behind the scenes, sharing updates and guide you through any recommendations, while continuing with follow-up care at St Kilda Vet.

Your pet’s specialist sends us reports and recommendations, so we stay up to date with every step in their care.
One team, many hands
We’ll work from the same plan as your specialist, whether that’s for medications, medical procedures, follow‑up checks or monitoring at home.
Back to your regular vet
Once the specialist’s work is done, your pet’s day‑to‑day care returns back to us, keeping things familiar for both of you.
